    I agree with you. But if I had to try to explain what I think the author is going for-- she was kept isolated because the imperial family was looking for her and they were trying to not draw attention to her.

    Also the curse and the ducal family's own mental/emotional issues.

      Might be more to the story, if I remember right she has a curse right? Or was cursed when she was killed? That may have led to something, again I'm just theory crafting but hopefully we get a good explanation instead of the classic "we are here now"
