Chapter 80
It was the first time I’d ever heard such a thing.
Not the ‘Five Founding Houses’, but the ‘Four Founding Houses’?
And what did he mean by a curse?
It wasn’t just me. Even Leopold was staring at Harrison with an expression of complete disbelief.
“It has something to do with that. I think the House of Sayre may be able to help us.”
Looking slightly tense, Harrison gave a brief explanation before waving goodbye.
“Well then, I’ll stop by the Magic Tower first. Then I’ll head straight to the Sayre estate.”
And Leopold, who had been holding his horse’s reins as if he were about to leave at any moment, stood frozen like a statue.
“First things first, Alpheus. You should head back to the estate. I’m curious about that letter. If Langsy keeps waiting much longer, he’ll probably have a heart attack.”
Brisa quickly organized everything.
“I’ll return to the house I’ve been staying at, pack my things, and follow right behind you.”
Originally, she’d planned to stay until the summer wheat harvest. But Harrison’s arrival had changed those plans. She would be leaving the West immediately.
There was no real reason for Brisa to stay just to watch the harvest.
“I still need to give instructions about the harvest schedule and shipping the wheat to the Sayre territory. Where should we send it? I suppose the warehouse at the Sayre estate would be best.”
Alpheus answered absentmindedly,
“But… it’s ‘your’ wheat, Brisa. You should decide what to do with it.”
“Just accept it.”
Brisa replied bluntly.
“I haven’t forgotten that you paid off every debt my mother owed.”
“No. When family is struggling, it’s only natural for siblings to help each other!”
“I think so too. That’s exactly why I want the summer wheat sent to the warehouse at the Sayre estate, since it’s the one that’s still having financial difficulties.”
With that, Brisa completely shut down any chance for an emotional exchange filled with gratitude or affection.
“Harrison said he’ll be stopping by the Magic Tower first… So it’ll probably take a while. Since this involves dark magic, he’ll likely be referred directly to the Lord of the Magic Tower, And it’s not as though the Lord spends every day waiting around for visitors.”
In the end, they agreed to split up for now and reunite later at the Sayre estate.
“See you later, Leopold.”
The three of them bid him farewell before departing.
“Good luck with… whatever you’ve got to do.”
As he slowly made his way back toward the Grand Duke’s residence, Leopold found himself torn.
By midnight, he would transform into the wolfhound once again.
It was already afternoon. There were only a few hours left before the transformation.
‘…Back to being a dog again.’
Leopold let out a long sigh.
Brisa had never shown it in front of him, But over the past three months, she’d clearly missed the dog.
Whenever she saw foods she’d often shared with him—croissants, grapes, peaches, she would quietly move her lips as though speaking to herself.
Because she believed he was Leopold’s wolfhound, she couldn’t bring herself to ask to see him. Even so, It was obvious she’d grown deeply attached to him.
Then again… He had spent ten straight days curled up in her arms.
The tips of Leopold’s ears flushed red.
He swore it. Back then, he hadn’t been in his right mind.
Strictly speaking, he had only been about half-conscious. If he’d been fully aware, there was no way he would’ve obediently offered his paw every time she said, “Paw.”
Still, Compared to before, he could control his aggression to an entirely different degree.
‘…Wait a second.’
Leopold frowned.
‘Judging from everything, the curse must have awakened in the East’s second son.’
Gillab’s reaction, Alpheus’s testimony about the singing monster’.
The eastern manor that had been flooded…
There was little doubt. He had transformed into some kind of beast associated with water.
‘Perhaps the fall of Bakahun in the North was also caused by the curse.’
Yet according to the ancient records, Only four houses had ever been cursed.
Now that he thought about it, House Sayre of the Central Region had joined the Five Founding Houses much later than the others.
‘Come to think of it… Was there ever a reason to include the Central House in the first place?’
Each of the four cardinal regions—East, West, South, and North— possessed its own unique characteristics.
For example, the West was covered in vast plains, and on those plains lived monsters that never appeared anywhere else.
The East bordered a vast ocean, and with it came sea monsters that existed nowhere else.
The South and the North were much the same.
Only the Central Region had no defining characteristic whatsoever.
Besides, the Central Region contains the capital, and its territory is far smaller than the others.
By the same logic, the Central Region had been excluded from the ancient curse from the very beginning. Unlike the other four houses, it was fundamentally different.
That information had never been made public. It was a closely guarded secret. Yet Harrison had just spoken of it as if it were common knowledge.
‘…Then does that mean House Naisar of the South as well?’
Even as he rode toward the Grand Duke’s residence, Leopold couldn’t stop the questions racing through his mind.
Why had Harrison asked House Sayre for help?
Did the Naisars possess information that even House Nosen had failed to uncover?
If so… Shouldn’t he know it as well?
After all, it was information he desperately needed.
And what if the South’s request for help ended up placing Brisa in danger?
‘Of course, Brisa and I aren’t anything to each other… But the West owes her a debt.’
If it hadn’t been for Brisa, they never would have succeeded in growing summer wheat.
Moreover, reports of contaminated farmland were now coming in from all across the West.
Yet everyone had managed to keep the panic under control with a single thought ‘At least we can rely on hydroponic farming’.
In fact, it looked as though they would be able to maintain their productivity that way for quite some time.
In that case… I can’t just stand by if she ends up in danger. This is a matter of honor.
In the end, Leopold pulled on the reins.
His transformation would take place at midnight. Which also meant… He still had time until then.
As the hour drew closer, he could instinctively feel it.
This time, he would be able to keep his reason. It was unmistakably different from before.
After a brief moment of hesitation, he turned his horse toward the warp gate. He had decided to head for the Sayre Marquisate.
He wanted to hear for himself what Harrison had to say and exactly what favor he intended to ask of House Sayre. If necessary, even if it meant revealing his own secret.
